WE CAN DO HARD THINGS
Today the WE, in we can do hard things, really took on a deeper meaning for me. Dropping off the gift today, it just hit home how much WE are all in this together…that alone we can do things, but together WE can do things we never thought possible whether that is in steps to make the world a kinder, gentler place or if it is in struggle when we need to hold each other up so that one of us can keep taking steps forward, WE can do hard things.
Our nominee today was Regina. She is doing HARD THINGS these days and I am thrilled that we were able to bring some joy to her this holiday season. Regina is a step mom to two teenage boys (one of the sons lives with her and her husband and one lives with his mom and stays with them through the summers) and mom to one 8-year-old daughter. Just about two years ago Regina’s family was knocked down by the news that her husband had once again been stricken with a brain tumor. Thankfully doctors were able to remove the tumor, but most of her husband’s speech and some of his motor coordination was erased when the tumor was removed. He can no longer work and she is now the sole provider for her family. Her husband has to be checked on a routine basis as he is a likely candidate for these tumors to recur. They have had many struggles and even though Regina’s family only lives 40 minutes away; there is still a great burden on her to carry her family.
When I dropped off the gift today, (I am just doing it by the element of surprise – I guess I should give warning, but I am not so far and it is working out better that way) and Regina was still on her way home from work, but her husband answered the door and as I explained what the gift was for, he just reached out and hugged me…he couldn’t think of the words to say thank you so he just hugged me. It was something I will never forget as long as I live. He then went on to tell me that it has been a bit rough lately and that he goes back to the hospital for tests on Monday. He will have an MRI on December 19th to determine if for sure there are no growths, so if you can say a special prayer for this sweet little family it would be much appreciated. He did have good news, they are going to get a puppy for Christmas. I know that the kids will love it and most of all I think it will help him as well.
